Andre Russell, the 33-year-oldamaican allrounder, has been retained by the Jamaica Tallawahs for another season. He had initially expressed reservations and described the Tallawahs as “the weirdest” franchise he had ever worked with, and he could not see himself continuing beyond CPL 2020 with the team. However, he has since reconsidered his stance and is expected to feature in the Hero CPL 2021 with the same team, the Jamaica Tallawahs.
Andre is touted as one of the greatest T20 cricketers of all time and is mentioned in the same breath as Chris Gayle. He has been playing for his national team, West Indies, since 2010 and has played in all the different formats for the team. He has, however, only ever played one test match against Sri Lanka in 2010.
Speaking of Chris Gayle, he had initially begged off the CPL this year to spend more time with the family, but he later confirmed his participation in CPL 2021, turning out for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Andre Russell will be teaming up with other phenomenal players in the Tawallahs team like Carlos Brathwaite, Shakib al Hasan, and Rovman Powell.
Rovman Powell will be the team skipper for CPL 2021. The 27-year-old Jamaican who plays for the West Indies National side has also played professionally for the Kolkata knight Riders in the IPL (Indian Premier League) and Dhaka Dynamites in the Bangladesh Premier League. He joined Jamaica Tallawahs in 2016 and enjoyed victory in his debut season as the Tallawahs won the CPL title that year. They have won one other CPL title, the inaugural CPL title in 2013, defeating the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final. Rovman will be hoping to make it a hat-trick of titles this year.
Carlos Brathwaite, the 32-year-old Barbadian allrounder, is in his second season with the Tallawahs, having joined last year. He has gathered vast experience in various leagues playing for teams like Birmingham Bears, Delhi DareDevils, Sydney Thunder, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Multan Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders. He made his international appearance in 2011 and has also had a stint as the captain of the West Indies T20 national team.
Making his return to the Jamaica Tallawahs is Shakib al Hasan, who played for them in 2016 and 2197. The 34-year-old Bangladeshi allrounder is a very highly decorated cricketer and a renowned philanthropist. He has held captaincy and vice-captaincy roles in his national team and is still active in the national squad. He has also played professionally for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Dhaka dynamites, Worcestershire, and Kolkata Knight Riders. He has also played for another CPL franchise, the Barbados Tridents, in 2013, 2018, and 2019. He is also the first and only cricketer to be ranked “No. 1 Allrounder” by the ICC in its Player Rankings across the three different cricket formats (Test, T20, and ODI).
Other members of the Jamaica Tallawah squad include James Joshua, Mansingh Abhijai, Persaud Ryan, Ali Haider, Edwards Fidel, Russell Andre, Mohammad Jason, Pretorius Migael, Walton Chadwick, Lewis Kennar, Zadran Ibrahim, Permaul Veerasammy, Ahmed Qais, and Mckenzie Kirk.
