Come September and the badminton fans will be treated with the Masters Ranking Badminton tournament to be held in Goa from 19th September. Badminton Association of India (BAI) has been making valiant efforts to revive the domestic badminton circuit for the last year amidst the Covid19 pandemic after being denied permission by the government authorities. BAI is changing tack by organizing the competition for players above 35 years of age instead of holding tournaments for juniors or seniors. BAI is trying to organize the competition for those over 35 years of age. The sports’ governing body has announced that the All India Masters Ranking Badminton tournament will be held from September 19 to 26 in Goa.
The eight-day-long tournament will be hosted by the Goa Badminton Association under the auspices of the Badminton Association of India at the Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium in Navelim. The tournament will have no qualifying rounds, and there will be only the main draw being played in both the men’s and women’s sections.
The Masters Ranking Badminton tournament is divided into two parts. During the first four days of the competition, matches for those in the 55-plus, 60-plus, 65-plus, 70-plus, and 75-plus age groups will be played. The second phase will be held from September 23 for those in the 35-plus, 40-plus, 45-plus, and 50-plus age brackets. As per the circular issued by the Badminton Association of India to all affiliated state units, September 11 is the last date for submission of entries and the draws will be published on September 18 on the BAI website. The Entries shall be received by BAI as per the existing system with a copy received through Affiliated Units only.
Masters Ranking Badminton tournament in Goa will form the basis for selection to the forthcoming BWF World Senior Championships 2021. The competition will take place from November 28 to December 4 in Huelva, Spain. The tournament is held every two years with men’s and women’s single and doubles matches.
The respective state units are requested to obtain NOC from other states before forwarding entry to the Badminton Association of India (BAI). States forwarding names for doubles partnering players from different states should have NOC or otherwise, names of the same pair should come from both the states failing which the entry will not be considered. All matches in the main draw of the Masters Ranking Badminton tournament will be played on best of three games of 21 points in the rally point system.
