The 2020-21 UEFA Champions League final will be played between two English clubs in Portugal on Sunday night with Manchester City and Chelsea locking horns to lift the title in Porto. Manchester City will be aiming to win their first European title while this will be Chelsea’s second chance to win the Champions League following their victory under Roberto Di Matteo in 2012. This will only be the third time two English sides will play the final of the Champions League.

Man City topped their group consisting of Porto, Marseille and Olympiacos with 16 points. They then beat Borussia Monchengladbach 4-0 across the two Round of 16 legs before beating another German opposition in Borussia Dortmund in the quarters 4-2 across two legs. They faced Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals, whom they beat 3-1 on aggregate to qualify for the summit clash.

Chelsea also won their group that had the likes of Sevilla, Krasnodar and Rennes. In the next round, they came across Atletico Madrid, whom they defeated 3-0 across two legs. In the quarters, Chelsea edged past Porto 2-1 across the two games despite losing 0-1 to the Portuguese side at home. Chelsea then beat Real Madrid 3-1 across the two games to qualify for the final against Guardiola’s men.

Recent Head-to-Head

Chelsea won the last game these two sides played with Hakim Ziyech and Marcos Alonso scoring for Thomas Tuchel’s men. Alonso’s goal came in the 92nd minute of the match. Earlier, Raheem Sterling had given City the lead in the 44th minute before Sergio Aguero missed a penalty in stoppage time of the first half. Chelsea also got the better of Man City in the FA Cup as they beat Guardiola’s men 1-0 in the semi-final to dent their hopes of winning a quadruple. Earlier in the year, City had defeated Chelsea 3-1 courtesy of goals from Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden and Kevin de Bruyne. Callum Hudson-Odoi scored a consolation goal for the Londoners in the 92nd minute.

Form Guide

Man City will go into the game with a resounding 5-0 win over Everton on the final day of the 2020-2021 Premier League season and have won seven of the last 10 games across all competitions. Chelsea, on the other hand, secured Champions League football for next season with a fourth-place finish in the league, despite losing 2-1 to Aston Villa in the final game of the season. The UEFA Champions League final will be played from 00.30 IST on Sunday, May 30.

The Champions League final will be played at the Estadio do Dragao Stadium in Porto, Portugal. The initial venue for the final was the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Turkey but because of COVID-19 restrictions, UEFA decided to move it to Porto. The decision to change the venue was because of Turkey being on the United Kingdom’s ‘red list’ for travellers, which means everyone travelling to the UK would have to quarantine for 10 days at government-approved centres. This meant everyone including fans, players and staff of the teams would have to follow the same, which prompted UEFA to take the final to Portugal from Turkey.

The UEFA Champions League final will be telecasted in India on Sony Pictures Sports Network (SPSN). You can watch the games on Sony Ten 2 SD & HD, Sony Ten 3 SD & HD (Hindi). Viewers can also stream the match online at SonyLIV.

Fans will be allowed to watch the game in Portugal but the official capacity hasn’t been announced yet. UEFA in a statement had earlier said that both the clubs will receive an allocation of 6,000 tickets each, which the general public can purchase from May 24. Fans will also not need to quarantine upon arrival in the UK but have to furnish a negative COVIS test within two days, which is in line with the foreign travel regulations stated by the UK government. Be prepared to watch some live fireworks on the field as the two rivals battle it out on Saturday!
