Raina Faces Criticism over ‘I am Brahmin’ Comment During a TNPL 2021 Game

Former cricketer Suresh Raina has faced backlash after a comment he made claiming he is also Brahmin during his recent commentary gig at the TNPL 2021. Raina inadvertently created an uproar online by comparing Tamil Nadu and Chennai’s culture with Brahmin identification.

Obviously, fans reacted online, with many pointing out that despite him playing in Chennai since 2004, he clearly hasn’t experienced the real Chennai culture. The 34-year old has been playing for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since the beginning of the IPL (Indian Premier League), apart from the 2 seasons in 2016 and 2017 when the franchise was suspended.

The incident happened during the opening match of the 5th edition of the Tamil Nadu premier league. As the Lyca Kovai Kings faced off with the Salem Spartans, his fellow commentators asked him about his connection with Chennai, and that is how he responded. Since Suresh has such a massive following, adding him to the commentary bench was meant to garner more support for the TNPL. Thankfully despite fans getting angry at Raina for his comments, the League has continued to receive support.

In other news, Suresh will go back to competitive cricket with the Kings in the UAE leg of the 2021 IPL. The T20 specialist has been Super Kings’ go-to man in the world’s richest franchise-based cricket tournament. In the IPL, Suresh is second only to Virat Kohli on the all-time top scorers’ list. In 2020 he announced he’d retired from international cricket but clearly, he still plans to stay in the limelight. Keep it here for these and more stories.
