The Nellai Royal Kings continued fighting for a place in the TNPL playoffs after defeating the Salem Spartans by 8 wickets. The highly contested match took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, where the Kings secured their third win in six games. The Nellai Kings captain and man of the match, Baba Aparajith and Yadav Sanjay, made superb plays that led their side to take the match.
Baba wanted to bowl a lot in the Salem Spartans vs. Nellai Royal Kings match and was prepared to do it; however, he hadn’t planned on bowling the 17th and 19th overs. That said, the condition of the game gave him the confidence to make those plays. Having studied the Spartan’s bowling style, the Royal Kings understood that if they were to win the match, they had to end the chase by the 18th or 19th over.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing, however, for the winners. They had almost batted themselves into a ditch until Sanjay came into the game. He drummed up momentum for his side with a rapid-fire showing of 3 fours and 3 sixes (41 off 26 balls) coupled with 4 fours and 1 six (38 off 42 balls) from Baba. This allowed their team to easily end the match at 121/2 to 120/8.
The Salem Spartans did, however, put up a good fight despite losing. Ganesh Moorthi and Ashwin Murugan tried their best to break through the Kings’ offense but were only able to get a wicket each. Their valiant bowling efforts were brought down by the poor performance of their fielders.
The Nellai Royal kings now have 7 points from the 6 matches they have played and are tied pointwise with second place Chepauk Super Gillies. The latter has 7 points from 5 games, only a point behind table leaders Trichy Warriors, who have 8 points from 6 games.
