Chennai Super Kings is arguably one of the top IPL teams, despite a forgettable 2020 season where they finished second last. CSK has won the title thrice (2010, 2011, and 2018) and would be keen to extend the tally to four in the upcoming edition. They’ll play their first match of the season against Delhi Daredevils on April 10, 2021, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
While the core has been retained, some fresh faces will be playing for CSK this season. CSK has ended the contract with Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla, and Kedar Jadhav, while the Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has announced retirement from league cricket. The franchise spent generously on acquiring Moeen Ali and Krishnappa Gowtham in the recent auction. Other buys include Robin Uthappa, Harisankar Reddy, Bhagath Varma, and Cheteshwar Pujara.
CSK has a fair share of all-rounders, including Ravindra Jadeja. The left-handed bat and left-arm orthodox bowler will be critical for CSK both, with the bat and ball. He can take crucial wickets and bat with the tail, finishing games with big hits. Though past his prime, Dwayne Bravo would be required to bowl death overs and play cameos to keep his team in the title hunt. Sam Curran, Moeen Ali, and Shardul Thakur can be explosive with the bat and effective with the ball.
CSK has a decent bowling order with some prominent Indian and international names. Shardul Thakur spearheads the pace attack in Josh Hazelwood’s absence, who opted out of the IPL. Deepak Chahar and Lungisani Ngidi’ll support him. Jason Behrendorff might get a few games if any of the pacers perform poorly. The spin department is well served by Imran Tahir, Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, and Karn Sharma. Even Raina can chance his arm.
CSK bats deep and is expected to put up and chase down big totals. Faf du Plessis is more likely to open the innings with the talented youngster Rituraj Gaikwad. The new entrant, Robin, can be the additional opener. With experienced pros like Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, and MS Dhoni, the team has a solid middle order. However, these batsmen lack match practice and hence, might struggle. The lower order is comprised of Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, and Moeen Ali. Sam Curran and Shardul Thakur could float up and down the order.
Who else but the skipper, MS Dhoni, would be the go-to wicketkeeper for CSK. Rituraj Gaikwad and N Jagadeesan are the two reserve wicketkeepers.
CSK is one of those teams that persisted with one captain, MS Dhoni, through its IPL history. He would again lead the team in IPL 2021.
CSK has a well-staffed coaching department headed by the former Kiwi captain, Stephen Fleming. Michael Hussey is the batting coach, L Balaji the bowling coach, and Rajiv Kumar the fielding coach.
