Day one of the 2021 CPL ended with a match between the Barbados Tridents, now known as the Barbados Royals, versus St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. The Patriots put on a spectacular display, winning the match by 21 runs earning them 2 points. Here’s how the match went down.
The Barbados Tridents (Barbados Royals) won the toss and elected to field, putting the Patriots to bat. They took full advantage of fielding and took out both openers Evin Lewis and Devon Thomas in the first 3 overs. However, Oshane put a stop to this run as he bowled Gayle, leaving St Kitts stumbling at 38/3 at the end of PowerPlay. Bowling with real gusto, Oshane went on to remove Asif Ali in his eighth over as his superb bowling resulted in 3/22 from his 4 overs. Bravo came in at the fall of the 4th wicket and, together with Sherfane, put on a brilliant 115 run in 70 balls, laying the foundation for the Patriots win. Fabian Allen came in and consolidated their win with an imposing 175/5.
The St Kitts & Nevis Patriots also made early inroads with their bowling eliminating both openers for the Royals. However, they needed a dire run-out to give them momentum when Johnson Charles found himself at the same end as Glenn Phillips. Bravo’s side went on to force the run-rate up and put pressure on Jason Holder’s batsmen, causing them to play high-risk shots. Holder and Mayers were eliminated without contributing much to the scorecard, and despite Shai’s effort to anchor the innings with his 44, his elimination with 6 overs to go left the remaining batsmen with a lot of ground to recover.
After this, it was clear the Patriots had won the match even as Azam Khan dealt them a few blows towards the end of the match. Keep it here for more on the 2021 CPL.
