Dates Confirmed For 2021 Hero CPL

The CPL (Caribbean Premier League) 2021 dates have been confirmed. The Hero CPL 2021 was initially slated for August 28th to September 19th but was later rescheduled. CPL 2021 dates were changed after talks between BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and the West Indies governing body (Cricket West Indies), which organizes the CPL.

The BCCI, earlier in May, suspended IPL 2021 after several confirmed cases of COVID breached different franchises’ bio bubbles. To prevent further escalation and to protect all involved, the BCCI suspended the IPL. However, in an SGM held on May 29th, BCCI finally settled on September 17th to October 19th as the window to hold the second phase of IPL 14. Teams would play the remaining 31 IPL matches in the UAE following the success of last year’s IPL, which was also held there. This date (September 17th) was arrived at after BCCI considered probable CPL conclusion dates and the scheduled tour of India to England.

Based on the original dates for CPL 2021 and the second phase of IPL 2021, there would have been an overlap of dates. Thus players and officials who are in both the CPL and IPL would have been inconvenienced. The CPL 2021 matches will be held in Warner Park in St Kitts and Nevis in strict bio bubbles. The second phase of IPL 2021 will be held in the UAE also in bio bubbles. To enable a safe transition from bubble to bubble and incorporate the mandatory three-day quarantine, the BCCI and CWI had to reach an agreement.

Although Cricket West Indies was initially hesitant to amend the Hero CPL 2021 dates, it reconsidered after prolonged talks with the BCCI. BCCI had initially asked the CWI to move up the CPL by at least a week, but after discussions, they struck a deal on June 17th, 2021. BCCI secretary Jay Shah was part of the team steering these talks with CWI. As a result, the CWI committee amended the Hero CPL 2021 dates to August 25th to September 15th, but after further consultations, they settled on August 26th to September 15th.

The six teams in CPL 2021will play their first group matches on August 26th, while the teams that will make it to the finals will duel on September 15th, 2021. All 33 matches in the Hero CPL 2021 will be held in a single venue, and quarantine protocols are expected to be enforced.
