He Is Set To Become Brand Ambassador Of St Lucia Zouks
The Windies are well known when it comes to the shortest format of the game. The Caribbean players have won two previous World Cups out of the six players, and some of the best participants come from the Windies. However, with the upcoming Caribbean Premier League, where most of these players shine, their careers may be coming to an end.
The CPL’s recent update is that Darren Sammy, the T20 World Cup-winning West Indies captain, has announced his retirement from the league. The now-former skipper of the St Lucia Zouks until CPL 2020 has a new role which will be T20 Cricket Consultant and Brand Ambassador for the 2021 CPL season. However, the news of whether the CPL 2021 Darren Sammy retires as a player is yet to be confirmed.
With the 2021 CPL starting to begin from August 28 in St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia Zouks also announced the retention of Andre Fletcher, Kesrick Williams, Roston Chase, and Rahkeem Cornwall, who had done well in the last season. However, despite finishing as the runners-up, the Zouks did not retain most of their players as most would have expected. Those retained include Obed McCoy, Mark Deyal, Javelle Glen, Andre Fletcher, Roston Chase, Kesrick Williams, and Rahkeem Cornwall.
Darren Sammy, brand ambassador of St Lucia Zouks CPL 2021, is looking forward to serving the new role in a new capacity with a “new passion” for this year. Sammy says it has been a pleasure to have led and been part of the St Lucia Zouks from its inception.
Sammy is one of the most experienced captains in the CPL. He led the St Lucia Zouks from 2013 to 2020 to record 23 wins in 62 games. While he was the captain, he recorded a win with a percentage of 38.33. Also, the Zouks reached the play-offs in seven seasons under him. For the 2020 tournament, they finished as runners-up, having lost to Trinbago Knight Riders.
Additionally, Sammy played a part in the Indian Premier League. During this period, he played for teams such as Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore. In his 22-match long IPL career, Sammy scored 295 runs and pulled off 11 wickets with a best 4/22. As an international Cricket player, the experienced all-rounder who has been part of the Zouks since 2013 showed to be the best. He clinched 44 wickets and scored 587 runs at a strike rate of over 147.
Sammy is set to join Andy Flower’s coaching staff at the Zouks. He will also be heading coach of the PSL franchise Peshwar Zalmi.
Coach Andy Flower has shared a personal message to Sammy concerning his newest appointment. Andy says he liked the interaction he had with Sammy, thanks to him for his work, and is looking forward to a better future with him. He also called him an “icon of West Indies white-ball cricket” and the “heartbeat of St Lucia Zouks.”
