Copa America 2021 is around the corner as it is set to be played in Brazil from June 14 to July 11 across four cities. The tournament which was supposed to be held in Argentina and Colombia was moved to Brazil because of rising coronavirus cases in both the countries and political unrest in Colombia.
With the tournament back in Brazil, the hosts will look to win it again as they are the defending champions following their win in 2019. However, it won’t be easy as all the teams are packed with big stars and they will be aiming to win the cup as well.
As the tournament comes closer, we take a look at the top ‘Golden Boot’ contenders for this year’s Copa America.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi will be going into the tournament as one of the favourites to win the Golden Boot. Messi had a very good season with Barcelona, scoring 30 league goals and nine assists but failed to win a major trophy with the club.
He would now hope to put that behind and perform for his national side and win a trophy. Messi has 9 Copa America goals to his name and will also look to set the record straight and win a final after losing in the summit clash thrice.
Neymar is once again set to lead the line for Brazil as they look to win back-to-back Copa America titles in their own backyard. The 29-year-old is one of the best-attacking players in the world and Brazil’s talisman.
Neymar would now look to keep his disappointment with PSG behind and aim to win a trophy for his national side. Neymar has so far scored 64 goals for the Selecao and is second to only Pele, who has 74 goals to his name in the list of most goals scored for his country.
Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani replied to everyone in fine fashion who doubted him. Cavani signed for Manchester United after signing for the former English champions on a free transfer and was rewarded with a one-year extension as well.
He scored 10 goals and three assists in 13 Premier League starts for United along with some important goals in the knockout stages of the Europa League.
Cavani will be key to Uruguay’s chances this year and his partnership with Luis Suarez will be key to their chances of winning a record-extending 16th title.
Following his release from Barcelona, Luis Suarez starred for Atletico Madrid as they won the La Liga title after seven years.
Suarez led from the front and scored 21 goals in his 32 league games for the champions, including the goal that sealed the title for Atleti.
Suarez has scored six goals in the tournament so far and his partnership with Cavani will be key to Uruguay’s chances of winning the tournament.
Eduardo Vargas has been one of Chile’s leading men along with Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez and is also their highest scorer in the history of the tournament with 12 goals to his name.
Vargas won two successive Golden Boots in 2015 and 2016 and Uruguay to their only two titles in the competition so far.
