Cricket West Indies (CWI) has selected 18 players who will participate in three T20I internationals against South Africa, Australia, and Pakistan. This contingent is expected to train and play together and is already observing COVID precautions for safety. They are gearing up for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which was initially slated for India but was shifted to UAE due to escalating COVID cases in India. However, the World Cup scheduled dates have not been affected much, from mid-October to early November 2021.
The CWI selection panel lauded its picks for the West Indies team for the Pakistan match by integrating seasoned veterans with fresh upcoming talent that will soon grace the big leagues. The aim of selecting the team almost six months prior to the World Cup is to bolster team cohesion, camaraderie, and confidence. West Indies will defend their World Cup title as they currently hold the T20 World Cup title. They also won the T20 World Cup in 2012, so they will be gunning for a hat-trick of titles.
The provisional squad will be the pool from which players will be picked before each series of T20s. Roger Harper, the head of the CWI selection panel, shed more light on the decision for these early call-ups as building a head of steam in readiness for the World Cup. Early squad selection would also enable them to pick the best players for the World Cup, judging from their performances in upcoming fixtures.
The provisional squad includes Allen Fabian, Bravo Dwayne, Russell Andre, Pollard Kieron (Captain), Gayle Chris, Mc Coy Obed, Thomas Oshane, Simmons Lendl, Hetmeyr Shimron, Holder Jason, Lewis Evin, Sinclair Kevin, Fletcher Andre, Edwards Fidel, Hosein Akeal, Hayden Walsh Jr, Cottrell Sheldon, and Nicholas Pooran as Vice-Captain.
West Indies played South Africa in Grenada National Cricket Stadium, losing three out of five matches. However, they turned the tables and won four out of five T20I matches against Australia played at Darren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia.
The next T20 offering is the Pakistan tour for West Indies 2021, originally planned to be a five-match event but later revised to four matches by the CWI. The change was occasioned by delays in the West Indies vs. Australia ODI series due to a positive COVID result in the West Indies camp. The first match in this Pakistan tour will be held on July 28th at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.
The remaining three matches of Pakistan vs. West Indies T20I will be held in Guyana National Stadium on July 31st, August 1st, and August 3rd, 2021.
West Indies Head coach Phil Simmons has chosen his first eleven in the West Indies squad for the Pakistan series. They are Kieron Pollard (Captain), Nicholas Pooran (Vice-Captain), Bravo Dwayne, Holder Jason, Hosein Akeal, Gayle Chris, Russell Andre, Simmons Lendl, Hetmeyr Shimron, Hayden Walsh Jr, and Lewis Evin. The subs and reserves are Allen Fabien, Sinclair Kevin, Obed Mc Coy, Edwards Fidel, Thomas Oshane, Cottrell Sheldon, and Fletcher Andre.
