He dons the role of wicket-keeper back-up
Chris Benjamin has been signed on a rookie contract to Warwickshire, although he played for the Warwickshire 2nd XI as part of his trials. He will serve as the spare wicket-keeper for the team. The 22-year-old led the Warwickshire team to clinch the 2nd XI Twenty20 Trophy this year. Chris had a remarkable game against Middlesex in the semifinal, making five catches. He also managed 149 runs from 66 balls against Glamorgan.
Chris has played two first-class matches for Durham MCCU making his first-class debut against Durham Cricket Club in March 2019. The South-African-born player has also played for Essex 2nd Eleven. Chris is also a specialist batter, increasing his worth to the squad. He is a hard hitting batsman capable of providing real power at the top of the order.
Warwickshire’s first-choice wicket-keeper Michael Burgess has recently signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him in Birmingham beyond 2023. The 26-year-old who joined the Bears in 2019 has risen to become a safe pair of hands as the Warwickshire wicket-keeper across all formats
Vikas Kelly has been considered Burgess’ replacement for wicket-keeper after he debuted for the Bears in the 2020 t20 Blast. The 18-year-old managed five runs and two stumpings during that match. He is yet to be put on contract, but is still a viable option if he is not snatched away by another team.
Chris was welcomed with open arms by the Warwickshire 2nd XI coach, Ian Westwood. Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, Westwood said,” Chris has spent a lot of time with us this season and has shown the qualities we look for on and off the field. He has fitted in really well and fully deserves his Rookie contract. He will be with us for the rest of the year so has a chance to push for a longer-term deal.”
The Warwickshire Bears are coming off a loss to the Yorkshire 2nd XI. In a series of matches played over four days (28 to 30th June and July 1st), part of the 2nd XI Championship 2021, Yorkshire won by only seven wickets. The Bears will play at the Edgbaston grounds in a four-day match (5th to 8th July 2021) against Lancashire 2nd XI as the Championship continues.
They are also slated to play their bitter rivals Worcestshire 2nd XI from August 23rd to 26th, 2021. The series of Championship matches will be held in Worcester.
