IPL 2021: Match 13, DC vs MI – Who Won?

IPL 2021, Match 13, DC vs. MI, took place at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Rohit Sharma won the toss and had opted to bat first on a spinning track. MI’s regular plan of quick start, consolidation, and launching at the end with their big hitters didn’t happen as they managed to score only a below-par score of 137/9. However, DC was able to chase it down in the 19th over to register their 3rd win of the season. They climbed up to the second position in the points table after this win.

MI Innings

MI was jolted early after Marcus Stoinis dismissed MI opener, Quinton De Kock, for 2 runs. Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav tried to consolidate and formed a 60- run partnership. After the powerplay, MI lost Suryakumar’s wicket at 24. The killer blow came when Rohit mistimed a shot and was caught by Smith, courtesy of some fine bowling from DC’s veteran spinner Amit Mishra. The spinner made full use of the pitch, and took 4 wickets, breaking the spine of MI’s middle order.

MI crawled to a score of 137/9 in 20 overs which was not enough to defend against a strong DC batting lineup. The bowling from DC was top-notch, with all the bowlers chipping in with wickets at regular intervals, derailing MI’s plan of scoring 170, which would have been a challenging score to chase on the slow track.

Chasing a manageable target of 138 runs, DC lost the early wicket of Shaw after he was caught and bowled by MI spinner Jayanth Yadav. But, the other opener Shikhar Dhawan was solid at the other end, maneuvering the ball to all corners of the ground. Steve Smith joined the chase with Dhawan and knitted a 50-run plus partnership to steady the ship. Then, Smith was dismissed for a well-made 33 runs off 29 balls by Pollard.

Later, Shikhar Dhawan was caught at square leg by Krunal Pandya off R Chahar’s bowling with the team score at 100. By this time, the match was almost in DC’s pocket with just 38 runs to score from 31 balls, and with 7 wickets still in the bank. The young batsmen Lalit Yadav and Shimron Hetmyer ensured no further hiccups and got DC over the finishing line in the last over, thanks to a no-ball from Pollard. DC showed the world from this win that they are among the top contenders for lifting the IPL trophy in 2021.

Man of the Match: Amit Mishra

Finally, Match 13, held at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, was not a high-scoring match but tested the batsmen’s technique and ability to adapt to a tricky pitch where the ball was not coming to the bat. In hindsight, Rohit’s decision to bat first backfired, but the credit has to go to the DC bowlers who never allowed any batsman to settle. Amit Mishra was instrumental in DC’s win and deservingly won the MOM award. As a result, DC looks like a complete side and is one of the favorites to lift the IPL trophy in 2021.
