In an entertaining clash between the Kings and Patriots, the tournament host franchise St Kitts and Nevis Patriots sealed the victory and became the CPL 2021 winner. Despite having big names in the team like Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis and Dwayne Bravo, it was the young squad (Dominic Drakes, Joshua Da Silva, and Sherfane Rutherford) of the Patriots that helped clinch their first CPL 2021 trophy.
Saint Lucia Kings, having won the toss, decided to Bat first. Rahkeem Cornwall and Roston Chase scored a stable 43 each for the team. In the final overs, Keemo Paul fierce 39 runs off 21 balls enabled St Lucia Kings to get 159 runs off seven wickets on the board in CPL 2021 final match. Paul hit three sixes in the 19th over to Drakes and then to Naseem in the final over.
If Keemo Paul had not made these precious runs for the St Lucia Kings, the chase would have been easy for the Nevis Patriots. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots were disciplined with the ball, and the fielding too was spot on. They did amazing on the field by stopping the Kings from getting doubles and triples.
Chasing a target of 160 runs looked like a mountaineering task for the Patriots as they lost Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis early. But the partnership between Joshua Da Silva and Sherfane Rutherford held the momentum for the team. At one point in time, the team was battling at 95/5, where Bravo lost his wicket in the 14th Over. But Dominic Drake’s audacious and fighting display showed a fighting character.
Drakes had other plans in his mind, as when he came to bat, the team needed 55 runs off 30 balls with five wickets in hand. He made 48 runs off 24 balls, winning the Man of the Match award and clinching the CPL 2021 Title for the first time for his team.
In the final over, Drakes was on strike with nine runs to win against Williams. On the first ball, Drakes hit an absolute stunner with a boundary. Drakes hit another sizzling drive over extra cover for four to level the scores in the next ball. Williams pierced in a Yorker to Drakes in the final ball straight onto the legs, but he flicked it to a short fine leg for a tight single. This single run in the end by Drakes made the Patriots CPL 2021 the winner and Drakes the Match winner for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. It is to be noted that this match was the first CPL title for Nevis Patriots.
