To give the round-the-year preparation facilities for cricketers in the national plan but not the national squad, the BCB has presented another program called the Bangladesh Tigers. Board chiefs Khaled Mahmud and Kazi Inam Ahmed will control, incorporating players who can’t be a piece of the high-performance squads or the under-19s.
Ahmed outlined his plans for the program for the “shadow” Bangladesh team at the press conference. He mentioned that the Bangladesh Tigers program was supposed to begin once the Dhaka Premier League T20s was complete. The initial intake for this team was supposed to be 16 to 20 cricket players, who would then work with the local coaching staff.
As BCB launches the Bangladesh Tigers program, Ahmed mentions how the A team operates on a tour-by-tour basis, and it’s tricky to get tours either at home or away. This has become a primary challenge, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bangladesh Tigers program is extensive for Kayes Imrul, Hossain Nasir, Islam Shafiul, Rahman Sabbir, or Anamul Haque Bijoy. These players have played for the national side and may even do so again, but they cannot play for teams like the Under-19 squad or high-performance.
However, Akram Khan, the BCB’s cricket operations chair, and the previous Bangladesh captain, was worried about the new program. He claims that there is already another team, the A team, which is under his department. Akram will have to sit with Ahmed because he has not even discussed this program with him. He also mentions that the A team consists of those who dropped from the national team and can play for the senior team.
Because Khan and his team have been busy with the World Test Championship and the ODI Super League, Bangladesh A team and other A teams worldwide have missed many tours because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ahmed said he is hoping to work with Khan and will have to liaise with cricket operations. According to him, the partnership between cricket operations and the program will be perfect, and during the A team’s next tour, they can work together.
Additionally, the Bangladesh Tigers program aims to ensure top-drawer facilities for players in the domestic circuit. Ahmed says that they are looking at players outside the high-performance set-up and regularly doing well in domestic cricket.
