The hard-hitting Bangladesh batsman, Sabbir Rahman, well known for his foul on and off-field behavior, has found himself amid a vast disagreement. Sabbir, representing Legends of Rupganj in this Dhaka Premier League season, has accusations from Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club of throwing stones and abusing one of their players. The player supposed to have been abused is Elias Sunny. The club has also lodged an official filled complaint against Sabbir Rahman over the abuse.
Rahman, who was supposed to be playing a match later in the day against Partex Sporting Club whose venue was at the BKSP 4 ground, supposedly abused Sunny. Sunny was at the field at the time of the abuse, and Sabbir threw stones at him just after he arrived at the sporting complex. Sunny was at the field representing his side against OLD DOHS Sports Club.
After the incident happened, Sunny informed the on-field authorities Habibur Rahman and Mozahiduzzaman. After that, the game was stopped for a few minutes. Dhanmondi then later wrote a letter to the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM). It is the board that keeps an eye on club cricket in Dhaka about discipline actions.
The letter for the complaint filed against Sabbir Rahman stated that he used abusive and racially discriminative language against Sunny. The letter continues to explain that such behavior is unacceptable, indecent, and also a punishable offense. Therefore, it requested disciplinary action to be taken for the Sabbir Rahman DPL complaint.
As Sunny spoke to ESPNcricinfo, he revealed that the incident was not the first one. He claimed that he was abused by Rahman earlier in the week when Rupganj took Dhanmondi. In addition, Sunny affirmed that Rahman yelled racial slurs at him on June 13 and 16th after they arrived at the field.
On the June 13 incident, Sunny was batting against Rupganj. Sunny claims that he had asked Sabbir thrice whether he understood what he was saying, but he kept repeating the same thing. Rahman had continued to tease him by calling him “Kalo,” but Sunny didn’t react at first. He got agitated when he started to throw stones at him, although he just maintained the protocol and told the umpires.
However, Rahman denied the accusations as he spoke to a Bangladesh publication, claiming that he would never disrespect a senior player. During the interview, he had even questioned why he would do something like that, especially to his seniors.
These accusations may be seen as accurate, especially with Rahman having known for misbehaving on and off the field. Like, in early 2018, he lost his main contract for assaulting a fan. Months after this incident in the same year, Rahman was banned for six months from international cricket by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for abusing a fan on social media. But this ban was reduced to one month later.
For the Sabbir Rahman DPL complaint, it will be investigated by the CCDM, who will decide the punishment for Rahman based on the reports given.
