Iyer was born in Mumbai, India, and grew up in a middle-class family. His father was able to take note of his cricketing passion and promised to nurture him. His father registered him to the renowned Shivaji Park Gymkhana—Mumbai’s local cricket hub.
With his Mumbai upbringing, Iyer was privileged to join India’s hub of international cricketers. With the Help of coach Pravin, a 12-year-old Shreyas Iyer was able to find his stand, and with consistency, he is now one of the most prominent batsmen internationally. Despite earning a spot in the U-19 world cup 2014, the youngster did not shine, and his performance was worrying. He, however, turned the downfall into his moment of glory after signing with Trent Bridge Cricket Team in England.
This provided him a platform to shine after scoring 297 runs in only three innings with a high average of 99. His English success relinquished his dream of playing in India, and in November 2014, he was drafted for the Vijay Hazare trophy, making his List-A debut. He never let his guard down and performed well in the domestic scene. He scored 273 runs at an average of 54.60 in the same tournament.
Shreyas Iyer has built his career off-batting and despite being one of the good batters. He is also known for his right-arm leg-break bowling. He has not bowled in all his 29 T20I matches, but in the ODI, he has scored 15 runs off 12 balls in only two innings. Since his first-class debut, however, he has taken four wickets in 54 matches and 24 innings. His run score stands at 401 from 565 balls at an average of 100.25 and a strike rate of 141.20.
In the List-A matches, he has taken part in 104 games, and out of 19 innings, he has taken five wickets and scored 237 runs off 236 balls. His average in List-A is 47.40, with a strike rate of 47.20. We expect to see his presence as a bowler in more cricket formats.
