Their captain, Dhoni, hit three boundaries off Tom Curran’s over and sealed the win with two balls left.

Delhi Capitals’ Innings

Delhi Capitals batted first, but it was not the best start they had hoped for. They lost their star batsmen, Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer to Josh Hazlewood. However, Prithvi Shaw kept targeting the Chennai Super Kings’ bowlers. He went on to score a brilliant 60 off 34 balls, which kept the Delhi Capitals’ scoreboard moving. He hit 7 fours and three sixes in his brilliant knock.

Ravindra Jadeja had a significant breakthrough by getting rid of Shaw when he had scored 60 runs. This was Chennai’s comeback into the game. Delhi Capitals then decided to send Axar Patel up the order, which did not prove to be a good decision. The all-rounder could only make 10 off 11 balls and was dismissed by Moeen Ali. Delhi Capitals lost Axar and Shaw within just five balls, which pushed them from 36-0 to 77-3.

The DC captain Rishabh Pant came to the rescue of the Delhi Capitals by smashing an unbeaten 51 off 35 balls. He hit3 fours and 2 sixes and forged a partnership with Shimron Hetmyer. On the other hand, Hetmyer managed to hit 37 off 24 balls and added 83 runs with the help of Pant for the fifth wicket. The Delhi Capitals then maintained their momentum and pushed to score 172 for 5 in their 20 overs. After 10 overs, Delhi Capitals was at 81-1 and had scored 91 runs in the next 10 overs.

Chennai Super Kings Innings

Chennai Super Kings needed to chase down the 172 target. But they received an early blow when Faf Du Plessis was bowled. The scoreboard read 3-1, but this did not kill their hope and determination to win the match. Robin Uthappa and Ruturaj Gaikwad came together and formed a strong partnership which gave the team 110 runs for the second wicket. This set the motion for the Yellow Brigade to chase down the target.

Gaikwad, the highest run-getter for Chennai Super Kings in the season, managed to score 70 runs off 50 balls, including 5 fours and 2 sixes. In the meantime, Uthappa hit 63 off 44 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Rishabh Pant brought back Tom Curran into the attack. DC managed to send Uthappa back for 63 runs and also ended up dismissing Shardul Thakur cheaply. Thakur had been promoted to  No. 4 but was removed for a duck.  Chennai Super Kings had been reduced from 113-1 to 119-4.

Dhoni Finished the Match in Style

After Gaikwad was sent back for 70, Dhoni decided to push himself up the order and went ahead of Ravindra Jadeja. He played an excellent cameo and took Chennai Super Kings to the Indian Premier League Final. He needed 13 off the last over and ended up hitting three boundaries pushing Chennai Super Kings to the grand finale with two balls left.
