Glenn Phillips 80 runs off 35 balls inspired Welsh fire to successfully chase London Spirits’ imposing 164 and win by three wickets to secure a seventh-place finish in their final group match of The Hundred Series played on August 18 at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. London Spirits’ loss relegates them to dead last in the standings after managing only one win in their woeful campaign in The Hundred Series.
In this final match of the two lowest placed teams in The Hundred Series, Welsh Fire won the coin toss and elected to field. Adam Rossington was first at the crease for London Spirits, and he managed 16 runs off 13 balls. The next batter up for Spirits was Josh Ingliss, who amassed an impressive 72 runs off 45 balls, hitting his second fifty of the tournament off 31 balls.
Ingliss’ run haul included seven boundaries and three sixes. Joe Cracknell was up next, striking 35 runs to continue London Spirit’s terrific start. Then, Eoin Morgan (25 off 12 balls) hit up Luke Fletcher for two sixes over midwicket in an over to give Spirits an unassailable lead despite 3-21 from Ryan Higgins. By the time London Spirits had played a hundred balls, they were up 163 runs.
In the second inning of the Welsh Fire vs. In The London Spirits match, Welsh Fire had a dismal start as Blake Cullen picked off Banton and Lloyd for second-ball ducks. The bad news continued as Fire captain Ben Duckett’s wicket was snared by Brad Wheal (3-30). Nevertheless, wicket-keeping batsman and star of the match Glenn Philips matched up to the crease and gave a scintillating performance, even at some point looking likely to clinch a record century in The Hundred.
His fantastic run came to a close when he was caught out on the deep square-leg boundary leaving the fans sighing with disbelief. However, he could only garner 80 runs off 35 balls, including seven sixes and five fours. Glenn’s score is now the fourth highest in the tournament this far.
Josh Cobb and Leus de Plooy kept the momentum going scoring 54 runs between them as Welsh Fire buckled down to chase Spirit’s target of 164. Matt Critchley went out for a duck, but Qais Ahmad (13 off 6 balls) hit two consecutive boundaries to finish Spirits off. Thus Welsh Fire won this match with two wickets to spare. Glenn Philips, who has played for Caribbean premier League side Jamaica Tallawahs in the past, was named the player of the match.
