Which team has highest winning percentage in IPL?

The Indian Premier League is set to begin on April 9 with a mega clash between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

The tournament returns to India after a year as the 2020 edition was held in the United Arab Emirates because of coronavirus in India last year. However, unlike the normal days, the 60-game tournament is set to be played across six venues with the final on May 30 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The group matches will be played in Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mumbai and Ahmedabad while the playoffs along with the final will be held in Ahmedabad solely.

As the day draws near for the start of the tournament, we take a look at the most successful team in the 13-year history of the tournament. While Mumbai Indians remain the most successful team in terms of titles (5) and match wins, Chennai Super Kings have the best record overall when it comes to winning per cent.

Chennai, which won titles in 2010, 2011 and upon their return from a two-year ban in 2018, have a win per cent of 59.83 across the 13 seasons, out of which they missed 2016 and 2017 because of a ban.

CSK have played 179 matches in total and won 106 of them, losing 71 and one each ending in no result and Tie+L (match lost in a Super Over/Bowlout).

Chennai have been one of the most consistent in the history of the IPL apart from Mumbai. While Mumbai’s sheer dominance came over the last seven years, CSK have been a champion side under MS Dhoni right from the side and made 8 finals and won thrice. CSK have also made the playoffs on every occasion they’ve played barring last year when they finished outside the playoffs spots for the first time in their history.

The Dhoni-led side has strengthened this year and will be aiming to correct the wrongs of 2020 and return to winning ways again. They will start their campaign against Delhi Capitals on Saturday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
