Shubman Gill is a right-handed top-order Indian cricketer who has already made a name for himself at the young age of 22. He is known for his big runs and has proven to be a bright shining star on the Indian side. Shubman first came into the limelight in 2018 when as vice-captain of the India Under-19 team he scored 372 runs, winning him the player of the tournament trophy. Lakhwinder encouraged his son to make a future in the sport because he missed out on the opportunity himself. Gill was a clever little boy who showed promise at the age of three. Finally, his father decided that his talent was worth investing in and moved the family to Mohali. Here, Gill got the opportunity to train at the Bindra Stadium, and in no time, others noticed his talent and dedication and signed him up for the Punjab Under-16 team.

His Career

  • At only 11 years of age, Gill was selected to be part of the Punjab under-16 team. He became an instant sensation at his level when he made his debut and scored 330 runs in five matches.
  • At his first Vijay Merchant Trophy, Gill scored 200 runs in an inning, which was a brilliant performance.
  • He was hailed as the best Under-16 Cricketer in 2013 with the MA Chidambaram Trophy.
  • Gill was given vice-captaincy at the Under-19 World Cup team and did not disappoint, scoring 418 runs.
  • Gill was the lead-scorer at the Ranji Trophy in 2018, which earned him a trophy as the ‘player of the tournament.’
  • In January 2019, he made his ODI debut playing for India against New Zealand.
  • He was also the youngest batsman in India to score a double century at his first-class debut in August 2019, playing against West Indies.
  • Gill was named captain of India C in 2019 and became the youngest cricketer to have led a team in the Deodhar Trophy.
  • Kolkata Knight Riders retained Gill for the Indian Premier league of 2021. He has played over 15 matches, scoring 381 runs and two half-centuries.
