Rahul was first known as the cousin to Deepak Chahar. However, it didn’t take time for fans to realize that these are two very different players. Unlike his older cousin Deepak, Rahul is a leg spinner playing for Rajasthan in domestic cricket. The 22-year-old is known for his magical leg break googlies. Rahul knew early on that he wanted to pursue cricket and therefore decided to give up school and focus on cricket instead. He graduated quite fast through cricket ranks because he was particularly keen on becoming a professional cricket player like his older cousin Deepak. Rahul has, however, made his path in Indian cricket and his performance so far proves that cricket does run in his genes. So, who is Rahul Chahar, and why should he be on your radar?

Domestic career

Rahul made his first-class debut in November 2016 at the age of 16. He then made his List A debut in 2017 against Madhya Pradesh. Rahul has played in both the Under-19 and Under-23 tournaments and has represented India as a leg spinner. He made his debut for both the Ranji Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy at 17. Playing against the Under-19 team in England, the wunderkind picked ten wickets in 4 ODI matches.

IPL Career

Rahul caught the attention of senior players and was bought by the Pune franchise led by Ms. Dhoni in February 2017. Even though he didn’t stay long and only played three matches in the tournament, the experience of learning from the stars of the game is something he will always remember and cherish.

Rahul wasn’t part of the Under 19 World cup but was bought by Mumbai Indians at the IPL 2018 Auction. From the 13 matches he played, he picked a total of 13 wickets, putting him in Rohit Sharma’s good books.

T20 Career

The youngster was picked for the Mumbai squad in 2018 to play the Indian T20 league, and he didn’t get to play. Later the same year, Rahul picked up 20 wickets and became the leading wicket-taker at the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His art of leg-spin bowling impressed everyone watching him at the 2019 edition of the T20 league.

Last matches played 

Rahul was allowed to play in the IPL at a very young age. These are the three latest matches Rahul Chahar has played.

  1. Rahul’s only ODI match was against Sri Lanka at Colombo on July 23, 2021. This match ended in a loss for India as Sri Lanka won by three wickets with 48 balls remaining.
  2. His last T20I match was on November 8, 2021, against Namibia in Dubai, and India won by nine wickets with 28 balls remaining.
  3. Rahul also played his last FC match, Delhi vs. Rajasthan, at Delhi on February 12- 15, 2021, and the result was a drawn match.
