CSA Provincial T20 Cup 2021: Dolphins Secure a Win Against the Titans in the First Semi-Final

Khaya Zondo led Hollywoodbets Dolphins to victory with a fine half-century that saw them beat Multiply Titans by four wickets, earning themselves a spot in the finals. This was the first semi-final match of the CSA T20 Knockout competition, and it took place on Thursday at the Diamond Oval in Kimberly.

Zondo batted gracefully to score 58 runs off 45 balls, including five fours and two sixes. He then partnered with opener Sarel Erwee scoring a combined 59 run third-wicket stand, with Sarel scoring 33 off 31, including two fours and two sixes. These scores were the roadmap to a clean win against their opponents. A couple of late wickets put the Titans back on track with 121 runs to score in 18 overs. The Dolphins were still 18 down to win in the two remaining overs. In the 19th over, Zondo took control, slamming Okuhle Cele to get six and two fours with consecutive balls, scoring 16 runs in the over.

Dolphins from grass to grace

At the beginning of the innings, the Dolphins started the chase at their worst when Corbin Bosch took two wickets in the powerplay to lower their chase to 33 runs after six overs.

Keegan Petersen managed a couple of boundaries in the first over and tried to hit a wide ball off Bosch down to long-on to feather an edge to Gihahn Cloete, recording 19/1 in the fourth over. Marques Ackerman flicked Bosch directly to Donovan Ferreira at square leg in the fifth over, leaving the Dolphins in trouble.

Zondo partnered with Erwee at the crease, which was rough when two run-out chances nearly dismissed Zondo. They fell back on track and scored 42 for their team in just eight overs. The batters maintained the rate with Zondo’s six off Neil Brand, scoring ten runs off the ninth over when they broke the 50 run barrier.

Erwee with the scores

In the 10th over, nine runs were scored off Harmer, with Erwee’s six down the ground off Aya Gqmane in the 11th over earning them ten runs. Zondo took on Bosch to score back-to-back boundaries, which brought 10 runs in the 12th over as they glided to 81 for two. In the 13th over, Dyyaan Galiem’s bowling saw Erwee get the first ball over deep midwicket for a six, making the partnership worth 50 runs. After scoring 11 from the next five balls, Erwee top-edged the last ball to the wicketkeeper Cloete as they got to 92/3.

Baartman to the rescue

Erwee’s dismissal led to a mini-collapse in the middle overs that resulted in the Dolphins losing three wickets for five runs, with Cloete stumping Bryce Parsons off Harmer to a second-ball duck. In the 15th over, the Titans slumped to 97/5 with Jason Smith edging a wide ball off Galiem straight to Cloete. In the innings, Ottneil Baartman put the extra effort in his bowling to push the Dolphins over the limit, leaving the Titans with a low score of 138 all out.

Baartman’s displayed determination by picking 4-18 in only four overs, marked him as the top wicket-taker in the campaign. De Swardt and Thando Ntini supported him at 2-22 and 2-26, respectively.
